The European Parliament has passed the AI Act.
Here’s what it promises:
Safeguards on general purpose artificial intelligence
Limits on the use of biometric identification systems by law enforcement
Bans on social scoring and AI used to manipulate or exploit user vulnerabilities
Right of consumers to launch complaints and receive meaningful explanations

Some in the AI startup world are not happy:
Let’s see how this plays out.
Cognition Labs Launch Devin, the first AI software engineer
Today we're excited to introduce Devin, the first AI software engineer.
Devin is the new state-of-the-art on the SWE-Bench coding benchmark, has successfully passed practical engineering interviews from leading AI companies, and has even completed real jobs on Upwork.
Devin is an autonomous agent that solves engineering tasks through the use of its own shell, code editor, and web browser.
When evaluated on the SWE-Bench benchmark, which asks an AI to resolve GitHub issues found in real-world open-source projects, Devin correctly resolves 13.86% of the issues unassisted, far exceeding the previous state-of-the-art model performance of 1.96% unassisted and 4.80% assisted. LINK
Thoughts from Prof Ethan Mollick:
The “Devin the Software Engineer” agent is interesting because it suggests an alternative (and I think maybe more successful) model of integrating LLMs into organizations than application wrappers: treating AI like people who can be added to standard organizations and teams.
It’s a whole new era for software engineering. My hope is that this democratizes coding and allows many more domain experts to build applications.
Google Deep Mind introduces SIMA: a versatile AI agent
Introducing SIMA: the first generalist AI agent to follow natural-language instructions in a broad range of 3D virtual environments and video games. It can complete tasks similar to a human, and outperforms an agent trained in just one setting.
SIMA can perceive and understand a variety of environments, then take actions to achieve an instructed goal. It comprises a model designed for precise image-language mapping and a video model that predicts what will happen next on-screen.
What Is AI’s Place in History?
Renowned technology thinker Carlota Perez shares her thinking on AI and its role in shaping the future.
The crucial point is that AI depends on the internet, which in turn depends on powerful microprocessors and computers. They are all part of the digital transformation, which centers around technologies that are mechanizing mental, rather than manual, work. Extrapolating into the future, one can imagine that the next technological revolution could be a wave of innovation combining AI with biotech and a constellation of new materials. But we can still see them evolving within the context of an ICT golden age.

♥️ Devin's UI, it's low & no-code friendly. Kudos to @cognitionai team, nailed it for me. 🙏
I'm surprised in your very early poll results to see 'building an AI app' equal last on 11% of responses. 🖖
